How to Grill a Whole Chicken Perfectly
A whole grilled chicken is a simple but impressive BBQ dish. With crispy golden skin, juicy meat, and smoky flavor, it is perfect for family dinners and weekend outdoor cooking.

Ingredients
- 1 whole chicken
- Olive oil
- Salt
- Black pepper
- Garlic powder
- Paprika
- Rosemary or thyme
- Lemon
1. Prepare the Chicken
Pat the chicken dry with paper towels. Rub the outside with a little olive oil, then season evenly with salt, black pepper, garlic powder, paprika, and herbs. For extra flavor, place a few lemon slices and fresh herbs inside the cavity.
2. Preheat the Grill
Preheat the grill to medium heat and prepare an indirect cooking zone. Place the chicken away from the strongest direct heat so it can cook slowly without burning the skin.
3. Grill Slowly
Place the chicken on the grill with the breast side facing up. Close the lid and cook over indirect heat until the skin becomes golden and the meat is cooked through. Cooking time will depend on the size of the chicken and the temperature of the grill.
4. Check the Temperature
Use a meat thermometer to check the thickest part of the breast and thigh. The chicken should reach at least 74°C / 165°F before serving.
BBQ Tip: For crispier skin, move the chicken closer to direct heat during the final few minutes of grilling, watching carefully to prevent burning.
5. Let It Rest
Remove the chicken from the grill and let it rest for about 10 minutes before carving. This helps keep the meat juicy and tender.
Enjoy Your Grilled Whole Chicken
With simple seasoning and steady heat, a whole grilled chicken can be crispy on the outside, juicy on the inside, and full of smoky BBQ flavor. Serve it with grilled vegetables, potatoes, salad, or your favorite BBQ sides.
