Cedar Plank Smoked Salmon

Cedar plank salmon is an easy way to add a light smoky aroma to fresh fish. The plank protects the salmon from direct flames while helping it stay tender, juicy, and full of flavor.

Ingredients

  • 1 salmon fillet
  • 1 untreated cedar grilling plank
  • Olive oil
  • Salt
  • Black pepper
  • Garlic
  • Lemon slices
  • Fresh dill or parsley

1. Prepare the Cedar Plank

Soak the cedar plank in water for about 1–2 hours before grilling. This helps prevent the wood from burning too quickly and creates gentle aromatic smoke while cooking.

2. Season the Salmon

Pat the salmon dry and brush lightly with olive oil. Season with salt, black pepper, and garlic, then add lemon slices and fresh herbs on top.

3. Grill on the Cedar Plank

Preheat the grill to medium heat. Place the soaked cedar plank on the grill and set the salmon on top, skin-side down. Close the lid and cook over indirect heat until the salmon is tender and flakes easily.

4. Check the Temperature

The thickest part of the salmon should reach approximately 63°C / 145°F before serving. Avoid overcooking, as salmon can dry out quickly.

BBQ Tip: Keep a spray bottle of water nearby in case the edges of the cedar plank begin to flare up. The plank should smolder gently rather than burn with an open flame.
